As parents, we hope we are doing our best to empower our children so they can have the confidence to succeed in the future. When we raise our children to be confident we simultaneously increase the likelihood that they will stand up for themselves and for others.
Here are a few tips on how to empower your children!
1. PRACTICE SELF-COMPASSION
Teaching your children to be kind and understanding towards themselves is crucial. Having a positive attitude and self-talk towards oneself can help prevent your child from being too hard on themselves which can severely undermine their confidence. One good rule of thumb is to treat yourself with the same compassion as you would to a good friend.
2. CELEBRATE YOUR STRENGTHS
Have your child make a list of their skills, achievements, and positive qualities. This allows them to see all the amazing qualities that they possess visually. Referring back to this list at times when we may not be feeling our best can serve as a reminder of all of their strengths and capabilities.
3. SET ACHIEVABLE GOALS
When setting expectations for ourselves, while it is good to have big goals that may take longer to achieve, it is also equally as important to set small achievable goals. Having these smaller goals allows us the opportunity to celebrate all of our accomplishments, even the smaller ones. This will give you a sense of progress and accomplishment, boosting your confidence.
4. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE
Providing your child with a supportive environment that allows their confidence to grow is crucial. When we are surrounded by those who believe in us, encourage us, and bring out the best in us, confidence can begin to soar.
5. PRACTICE SELF-CARE
Make time for activities that nourish your mind, body, soul and spirit. Exercise, practicing healthy eating, getting sufficient rest, and seeking counseling services can all contribute to increased confidence in oneself and overall well-being. If you are interested in speaking to someone about more ways to increase your self-confidence, don’t hesitate to reach out and speak to a therapist!
Remember, building confidence is a journey, and it’s important to be patient and consistent with yourself. Celebrate small wins, and don’t be afraid to seek support from friends, family, or a therapist if needed.
